TRIPS TO OTHER AREA RIVERS

  • Des Plaines River northern trip - a 2 ˝ hr. paddle in a serene setting in the forest preserves of Cook County.
    • Sat., July 24th, 10:00 launch
    • Sat., Sept. 18th, 10:00 launch
    • We'll launch at Rivershire Park (just north of Deerfield Rd.) and paddle to Camp Pinewoods at Euclid & River Rd.

  • Butterflies & Lupines on the Little Calumet River - The highlight of this easy 2 1/2 hour trip will be a meadow of lupine flowers - the only host of the endangered Karner Blue butterfly, which is abundant here. A Field Museum biologist will give a brief talk about the butterflies.

  • Little Calumet River trip - Last year, our group followed a pair of egrets, birds that many people associate with the Florida wetlands, down the Little Cal in south suburban South Holland.

  • Gary Lagoons - Yes, that Gary. It's really beautiful. We'll paddle the Marquette Park lagoons, cradled between two long dunes.

    • This trip will coincide with Gary's Clean Water Day, so exact details will be posted as they're available.

  • Kankakee River Paddle & Crane Viewing - Each fall, all the Sandhill Cranes of the upper Midwest fly south, stopping over at a single preserve in Northwest Indiana for a month of socializing and courtship. We’ll head over to paddle a stretch of the Kankakee River, where we may see some cranes and other migrants, then swing by the Jasper-Pulaski preserve for the sunset spectacle of as many as 15,000 cranes returning from their daily feeding grounds.
