TRIPS TO OTHER AREA RIVERS


  • Little Calumet River trip - Last year, our group followed a pair of egrets, birds that many people associate with the Florida wetlands, down the Little Cal in south suburban South Holland.
    • round trip upriver through forest preserves and then back to the launch
    • Sun. June 14th, 11:00 or 12:30 launch
    • $25 / boat (single or tandem kayak or canoe)

  • Salt Creek trip - West of the city, Salt Creek meanders through forest before pouring into the Des Plaines. We'll paddle from Brezina Woods (off La Grange Rd.) to Brookfield.
    • Sun., July 26th, 10:00 launch
    • $35 / person in canoes & tandems; $45 / person in single kayaks

  • Des Plaines River northern trip - a 2 ˝ hr. paddle in a serene setting in the forest preserves of Cook County.
    • Mon., Sept. 7 (Labor Day), 10:00 launch
    • We'll launch at Rivershire Park (just north of Deerfield Rd.) and paddle to Camp Pinewoods at Euclid & River Rd.
    • $35 / person in canoes & tandems; $45 / person in singles

  • Kankakee River Paddle & Crane Viewing - Each fall, all the Sandhill Cranes of the upper Midwest fly south, stopping over at a single preserve in Northwest Indiana for a month of socializing and courtship. We’ll head over to paddle a stretch of the Kankakee River, where we may see some cranes and other migrants, then swing by the Jasper-Pulaski preserve for the sunset spectacle of as many as 15,000 cranes returning from their daily feeding grounds.
    • Sat., Oct. 24; Sun., Oct. 25; Sat., 31; or Sun., Nov. 1
    • paddling starts at midday; crane viewing from an hour before sunset; (the hours vary a bit from day to day with the sunset)

    • We'll provide transportation for a $10 contribution to gas.
    • Bring binoculars if you have them! And a camera.
